Matthew Hilton is Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Birmingham. He is the author of Smoking in British Popular Culture (2000) and Consumerism in Twentieth-Century Britain: The Search for a Historical Movement (2003) and co-editor of The Politics of Consumption: Material Culture and Citizenship in Europe and America (2001) and Au nom du consommateur (2004). He was a 2002 winner of the Phillip Leverhulme Prize and is currently researching the role of the consumer in global civil society. This project examines the roles of consumer organizations such as Consumers International and their interactions with supra-state bodies, non-governmental organisations and issues-based campaigning networks.
